Have you ever seen a boat that will go 135 mph, turn on a dime — and give you 9 cents change?
Come November, you’ll have the opportunity to watch as many as 45
such F1 and F2 hydroplanes part the waters of Lake Avalon in East
Naples when the ChampBoat Series makes its first-ever trip to Collier
County.
Longtime boat racer Brian Ohlis of Naples is the man heading up the
Naples ChampBoat Grand Prix, to be held Nov. 1-2 at the county-run
Sugden Park facility. He says the event — the final race of the 2008
ChampBoat Series schedule — will bring the national series’ top names
to town, and that the “stadium setting” for the event will make the
Naples stop one of the most fan-friendly on the circuit.
“It’s one of the most exciting aspects of having the boats come
here,” said Ohlis, who has worked with local officials for nearly a
year to put together the two-day special. “Fans will be able to see
up-close what’s going on and will be able to take in the racing from
all around the lake. Most of these races are held on rivers. Lake
Avalon is the ideal site.”
